Nose breathing and mouth taping
Nasal breathing has several important functions. The nose warms, humidifies and filters the inhaled air before it reaches the lungs, which protects the airways and optimizes oxygen absorption. When breathing through the nose, nitric oxide (NO) is also released in the nasal passages. NO causes the muscles of the blood vessels to relax, which dilates the vessels and increases blood flow. This helps to transport more oxygen in the blood. Mouth taping is a method where the mouth is closed during sleep to encourage nasal breathing and enhance these natural processes.
Oxygenation and nitric oxide
Scientific studies show clear benefits of nasal breathing compared to mouth breathing. One study reported that blood oxygen pressure (transcutaneous PaO₂) increased by approximately 10% during nasal breathing compared to mouth breathing. In patients on a ventilator, arterial oxygen saturation increased by approximately 18% when they were allowed to breathe nasal air containing endogenous NO. These results suggest that nasal breathing effectively improves oxygen uptake in the blood, not least through the vasodilating effect of NO.
Nitric oxide in the nose also has other physiological benefits. NO acts as a natural bronchodilator and has antimicrobial properties, which means that nose breathing can strengthen the immune system in the respiratory tract. In addition, increased NO blood flow lowers blood pressure slightly by dilating the blood vessels. Overall, nose breathing leads to more efficient blood circulation and increased oxygen supply to the body.
Sleep, snoring and mouth taping
Mouth taping can improve sleep quality by reducing the negative effects of mouth breathing. Research at the University of Gothenburg shows that improved nasal breathing is often linked to improved nighttime sleep and increased daytime vitality. Studies on individuals with mild sleep apnea show that mouth taping during sleep can halve both the respiratory arrest index (AHI) and snoring index. A review study confirms that mouth taping often improves snoring in both snorers and patients with mild sleep apnea.
By forcing nasal breathing, the risk of airway obstruction that can occur with mouth breathing is reduced. This can lead to fewer interruptions in breathing (less apnea) and more restful sleep. Furthermore, nasal breathing helps keep the airways moist, which can prevent irritation that often worsens snoring. Overall, the research suggests that mouth taping may work as a simple tool to improve sleep and reduce snoring, although more studies are needed to fully determine its effects.
Other health benefits
In addition to better oxygenation and sleep, nasal breathing can have broader health benefits. The nitric oxide produced by nasal breathing lowers blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, which can ultimately relieve the heart and reduce the risk of vascular disease. Regular nasal breathing also prevents problems such as dry mouth and bad breath – both common consequences of persistent mouth breathing – because the nose keeps the oral cavity moist and clean. Good oral health also promotes dental health.
Overall, existing research and clinical experience indicate that actively promoting nasal breathing has several positive health effects. These include better oxygenation, stronger blood circulation, improved sleep, and reduced snoring and dry mouth. More scientific studies will make it possible to further confirm and quantify these benefits.
Advantages of Ando Mouth Tape:
Ando Mouth Tape is designed to keep the mouth softly closed during the night and at the same time promote nasal breathing. Nasal breathing filters the air, warms it and humidifies it before it reaches the lungs. The nasal passages release nitric oxide NO which dilates the blood vessels, improves oxygenation by up to ten percent and strengthens the immune system in the respiratory tract. Thanks to a more even breathing rhythm, micro-arousals are reduced and it becomes easier to reach deeper sleep phases such as REM. Studies show that the snoring and apnea index is often halved in people with mild sleep apnea. The thin breathable film in Ando Mouth Tape lets air through when needed and prevents condensation on the skin and reduces the risk of irritation. The tape is CE marked and ISO certified, which guarantees that it meets European standards for medical safety and quality. With Ando Mouth Tape, nasal breathing becomes easy, natural and safe. This is an effective way to more restful sleep, more alert mornings and better health.
